Governor General to preside over inaugural presentation ceremony of the Peace Officer Exemplary Service Medal

OTTAWA –– Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, will present 27 Canadians with the newly created Peace Officer Exemplary Service Medal during the inaugural presentation ceremony on Friday, May 12, 2006 at 10:30 a.m. at Rideau Hall.
The Peace Officer Exemplary Service Medal was created on December 15, 2004 to recognize peace officers who have devoted at least 20 years in protecting the safety and security of the public in Canada and who have performed their duties in an exemplary manner. The Peace Officer Exemplary Service Medal is the sixth medal in the family of Exemplary Service Medals. The honour may be awarded posthumously.
Peace officers are employed by a recognized organization including, but not limited to, the Canada Border Services Agency as well as Parks Canada; the departments of Citizenship and Immigration, Environment, and Fisheries and Oceans Canada.
