Governor General to receive symbolic first poppy of the 2005 Poppy & Remembrance Campaign

OTTAWA–Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada and patron of the Royal Canadian Legion, will receive the symbolic first poppy of the 2005 Poppy & Remembrance campaign from the Grand President of the Legion, Charles H. Belzile, on Tuesday, October 25, 2005, at 1:45 p.m., at Rideau Hall.

Each year, approximately 19 million poppies are distributed in communities across the country. Officially adopted by Canada in 1921 by the Great War Veterans Association––a founding group of The Royal Canadian Legion––poppies are the national symbol of remembrance for those who have served our country both in times of war and peace.  Photo-op and speeches are open to the media.
