Come savour the classic sounds of summer at The Governor General’s Summer Concert Series

July 13, 2006

OTTAWA–Everyone is invited to savour the sounds of summer on the grounds of Rideau Hall during The Governor General’s Summer Concert Series. The series includes five free outdoor concerts in July featuring an array of gifted Canadian performers.

Come hear the sound of Canada’s future when The Governor General's Summer Concerts 2006 gets underway Saturday, July 15, at 4 p.m. with The National Youth Orchestra of Canada.  Many of Canada’s professional orchestral musicians started their career in this orchestra.

The second concert in the series will feature the Band of the Ceremonial Guard, one of the oldest and best-known military bands in the country, on Sunday, July 16, at 4 p.m.  The band’s rich repertoire will certainly enchant young and old.

The internationally renowned National Arts Centre Orchestra will perform a concert on the grounds on Saturday, July 22, at 4 p.m. Under the baton of guest conductor Alexander Mickelthwate, the orchestra will perform popular works by Mendelssohn, Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven.

Rideau Hall and the Ottawa Chamber Music Festival join forces to present the superb ensemble, Quartango, on Sunday, July 23, at 4 p.m.  These four-to-tango musicians bring the genre to its highest and finest note, with subtle, sometimes unexpected pieces inspired by classical and contemporary repertoires.

A second concert presented in cooperation with the Ottawa Chamber Music Festival concludes the Governor General’s Summer Concert Series when
The Gryphon Trio performs on Sunday, July 30 at 4 pm.  For the trio, three means harmony, where violin, cello and piano bring classical music and contemporary Canadian repertoire to the best of Chamber music.

The Governor General’s Summer Concerts are a popular summer activity for the whole family. Audiences are invited to come early, bring a picnic and make an occasion of these outdoor events on the beautiful grounds of Rideau Hall. All concerts are free of charge. Rideau Hall would like to gratefully acknowledge its concert media partners, Le Droit and the Ottawa Citizen.

Media interested in covering the concert are asked to contact the Rideau Hall Press Office.
