Message from Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaėlle Jean, Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada, on the death of four Canadian soldiersAugust 3, 2006 “Today, Jean-Daniel and I share the grief of a nation. It was with great sorrow that we learned of the death of four of our soldiers and of the injuries sustained by a number of their comrades-in-arms during attacks by Taliban militia in and around Kandahar. Our thoughts are also with the innocent Afghan civilians who lost their lives to those who are clearly against re-building a country based on the rule of law, and the re-establishment of basic freedoms in Afghanistan. We must salute the sense of duty and the determination of our soldiers as they face dangers in the name of rebuilding Afghanistan. They are doing so–even paying the ultimate sacrifice–with the conviction that they are bringing a ray of hope to the men, women and children who deserve to live in peace, and who are counting on the support of the international community. The thoughts of all Canadians are with the families, friends and comrades of those soldiers affected by today’s events.” -30- Media information |
