Message from Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada, on the death of Master Corporal Raymond Arndt

August 5, 2006

Today, we regrettably learned that Master Corporal Raymond Arndt lost his life in Afghanistan in a road accident involving a supply convoy and a civilian truck, which also injured three of his comrades.

As Canadians, we are becoming increasingly conscious of the commitment that our soldiers make on our behalf, day after day, around the world. They deserve both our respect and highest esteem for their work. Regardless of the incident, and even as they grieve this loss, their fellow soldiers remain determined to move forward and do so with an admirable conviction.

We can only hope that their determination and perseverance will one day put an end to the pointless, destructive violence that is affecting the Afghan people, and will finally bring harmony and a brighter future to the country.

On behalf of all Canadians, I wish to extend my deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Master Corporal Raymond Arndt; our thoughts are with them during this most difficult time. We also offer our best wishes for a speedy recovery to our injured soldiers.
