Governor General to attend 50th anniversary celebrations at Queen Elizabeth Public School in Ottawa

November 6, 2006

OTTAWA—Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, will join with students and staff to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth Public School on Tuesday, November 7, 2006, at 10 a.m.  The school is located at 689 St. Laurent Boulevard in Ottawa.

The celebrations will kick off with a ceremony in the gymnasium where students will perform ethnic dances and songs, as well as recount the school’s history in a play. Works of art representing the many countries of origin of the students attending Queen Elizabeth Public School will also be exhibited. The Governor General will deliver short remarks and unveil a painting by a student.

Queen Elizabeth Public School enjoys a long-standing relationship with Canada’s governors general. The late Vincent Massey opened the school in 1956, and former governor general Edward Schreyer attended the school’s 25th anniversary in 1981.
