Purpose

This manual provides a description of Canada Post's requirements for the physical characteristics of individual items of Lettermail. These requirements, such as acceptable fonts and the location of clear areas, are designed to ensure that our machinery can easily process this mail.

For any other information about Lettermail, see the Postal Guide, Section C – Chapter 8 – Lettermail, and Chapter 9 – Incentive Lettermail.

Options

You have the following options in preparing your Incentive Lettermail:

Presort – Sequence, group, containerize, and label your mailings according to the following:
Lettermail National Presortation Schematic (LNPS)
Incentive Lettermail Mail Preparation and Presortation Guide.

Machineable – Prepare your mailings so that they can be processed by Canada Post machinery and be sorted according to one of the following:
Address
Bar code.

This manual has been organized according to these different options. Section 1 describes the few requirements that are applicable only to Presort Mail. The remaining sections, 2 to 7, explain the requirements for both Machineable Mail and Presort Mail.

Note: Most mail that does not meet the requirements described in this manual may still be mailed but at higher postal rates.
