Presort Mail

5. Presort Mail Requirements

Table of Contents

5.1  Letter Carrier Presort (LCP) Mail

Delivery Mode Code (DMC)

You must include the current DMC in the address to qualify for the Letter Carrier Presort (LCP) option. The DMC should be:

Not less that 2 mm in height.
On a line without delivery address information (e.g. the line containing the name of the addressee).
Placed three to four blank characters to the right of the longest non-addressing line.

Example of a delivery mode code: H 12 (M)

5.2  Newspapers

5.2.1  Unwrapped Single Copies

Show the address across the top or bottom edge so that it can be easily read when holding the newspaper at the fold.

5.2.2  Wrapped Single Copies

Show the destination address so that it can be read easily in the following:

1.Across the top or bottom edge of the newspaper

Or

2.On the outside of the wrapper.

5.2.3  Bundle of Unaddressed Copies

Affix an address label to the outer top copy or on the outside of the wrapper with the notation DIRECT BUNDLE TO THIS ADDRESS on, or near, the address label.

For more information on bundles of unaddressed copies, refer to the Publications Mail Customer Guide.

5.3  Magazines and Newsletters

5.3.1  Unwrapped Single Copies

Send without a mailing wrapper only those items that meet the following requirements:

Minimum thickness of 0.18 mm.
Minimum weight of 10 g.

Show the address so that it is uniformly applied and can easily be read when holding the edge of one copy.

5.3.1.1  Binding

Unbound

Enclose unbound, loose-leaf newsletters and publications in an envelope or wrapper.

Bound

Assemble publications by a permanent method of fastening such as staples, glue, or stitching. Use a method that keeps the item flat and even and does not cause it to bulge. For example, staples, glue and stitching are acceptable, but a spring spine would cause an item to bulge.

Bind the item along its longest side.

5.3.2  Wrapped Single Copies

Clear-wrapped Magazines/Periodicals

Show the address in one of the following locations:

1.On the item itself
2.On the outside of the wrapping
3.On an insert inside the wrapping.

In both these examples, the sealing line may be on the front – in example 1 because the line is higher that the address, and in example 2 because the address label is on top of the cover.

Place the insert with the address on top of other inserts and the publication. If the identifying information is shown on the publication instead of the address insert, ensure that the insert is not covering this information.

Sealing Line

Ensure the sealing line of transparent wrappers is not covering the address.

If the address is placed then locate the closing line and any
overlapping cover material
on top of the transparent wrapper either on the front or the back
beneath the transparent wrapper
preferably on the back (i.e. the side opposite the address side)
if on the front, not directly over the address.

Opaque-wrapped Magazines/Periodicals

Show the address on the outside of the wrapping.

5.3.2.1  Wrapping

Use wrapping that is no more than 40 mm longer and wider than the item.

5.3.3  Bundles of Unaddressed Copies

Affix an address label to the outer top copy or on the outside of the wrapper with the notation DIRECT BUNDLE TO THIS ADDRESS on, or near, the address label.

5.4  In an Envelope

Address Location

Show the destination address anywhere in the space below the top 40 mm on the front of the item.

Quiet Zones

Keep the area 3 mm in all directions around the address block clear of all printing and markings.

Advertising

Print advertising anywhere on the envelope except:

1.The address block and 3 mm around it.
2.The area for the indicia (if used), 74  mm by 40 mm, in the upper right corner.
