Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, takes a quiet moment with her daughter Marie‑Éden and her husband, His Excellency Jean‑Daniel Lafond, during a public ceremony at Edmonton City Hall on May 5, 2006. The ceremony showcased Edmonton’s rich cultural diversity, including Aboriginal hoop dancers, a youth choir, the Cariwest Performers, a brass ensemble, a Franco-Albertan group and a reading by the Poet Laureate. The Governor General also presented a Meritorious Service Medal to Olympian Becky Scott and the Caring Canadian Award to four Albertans. The Governor General conducted her first regional visit to Alberta from May 4 to 6, 2006. During her three-day visit, Her Excellency focused on building dialogue and forging links with as many Albertans as possible, including the military and their spouses, school children and youth, as well as community volunteers. This was her 7th provincial visit since the beginning of her mandate.
