Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, her daughter Marie‑Éden, and school principal Ted Thorne take part in a group photo with students in the school’s playground during a May 5 visit to Millarville Community School in Millarville, Alberta. Her Excellency also visited some classes, addressed the children in the school’s gymnasium and visited the archeological dig. The visit to Millarville Community School was in response to 75 personal invitations that the Governor General received from students to visit their school and their community, as well as their archeological dig. In 2005, Ms. Loretta Stabler and Ms. Patti Thorne, teachers at the school, received the Governor General’s Award for Excellence in Teaching Canadian History from Governor General Jean. In 2003, Millarville school teacher Pam Irving had also received this award from the Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson, the former governor general.
