Governor General to receive symbolic first poppy of the 2006 national Poppy Campaign

October 23, 2006

OTTAWA—Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada and Patron of the Royal Canadian Legion, will receive the symbolic first poppy in advance of Remembrance Day from the Honorary Grand President of the Legion, Lieutenant-General (Ret) Charles Belzile, on Wednesday, October 25, 2006, at 2:00 p.m., at Rideau Hall.

Each year, about 18 million poppies are distributed in communities across Canada. Officially adopted by Canada in 1921 by the Great War Veterans Association (the predecessor of the Royal Canadian Legion), poppies are recognized as the national symbol of remembrance for those who have served our country in wartime and in peacetime. This year’s official campaign begins on October 27, 2006.

Media interested in attending this event are asked to call the Rideau Hall Press office.
