Hornet number 702 of 410 "Cougar" Squadron
in Cold Lake, Alberta escorts Lancaster Mk X KB 726 VR*A of 419 "Moose" Squadron,
a reconstruction of the Aircraft in which Pilot Officer Andrew
Mynarski won his Victoria Cross over Cambrai, France in the Second
World War. The original Aircraft went down in flames over France,
but Lancaster Mk X FM 213 was restored to flying condition by the
Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum (CWHM) and rededicated as the "Mynarski
Lanc", complete to registration numbers.

The Avro Lancaster, which ran on four Merlin engines,
proved to be a classic. The Aircraft typically carried a 14,000
pound bombload (about two and one half tons MORE than the American
B-17G Flying Fortess bomber). Later versions of the Lancaster could
lift the massive 12,000 pound "Tall Boy" and the 22,000
pound "Grand Slam" bombs!

The Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum's restored "Mynarski
Lancaster" is escorted by two CF-5s, the nearer of the two
being the 419 "Moose" Squadron's airshow bird (now retired
and on a pedestal in Kamloops). The Mynarski Lanc has made regular
airshow appearances in past years, but the summer of 1996 will
mark its final full circuit tour. Thereafter, it will restrict
its appearances to the Hamilton, Ontario region and its museum
home.
