CH-124 Sea King

The blades on a CH-124A Sea King, flown by a crew from 423 Maritime Helicopter Squadron, 12 Wing Shearwater, are unfolded before engine start. The main rotor blades and tail on the helicopter can easily fold in order to accommodate them in the small hangars on board the navy's city-class frigates and Iroquois-class destroyers.

A crew from a CH-124 Sea King returns from a local training operation. Sea King crews can spend more than six months a year deployed with one of the navy's 12 city-class frigates, four Iroquois-class destroyers or two replenishment ships.

CH-124 Sea King

Canada's Sea King fleet takes on many roles. Besides being assigned surface and sub-surface surveillance, counter-drug operations, coastal sovereignty, environmental monitoring, fisheries patrols, limited reconnaissance/land surveillance, utility and helicopter delivery service, the Sea King fleet is also tasked with secondary search and rescue, when required.

A CH-124A Sea King from 423 Maritime Helicopter Squadron based, at 12 Wing Shearwater, embarks on-board HMCS Fredericton as it heads into the fog at the mouth of Halifax Harbour. The crew is heading on a three-week fisheries patrol, augmenting the Department of Fisheries and Oceans in monitoring activities off the East Coast.

An Airborne Electronic Sensor Operator (AESOP) aboard a Helicopter Operational Test and Evaluation Facility (HOTEF) CH-124B Sea King test fires a C-9 machine gun that would be used in self-defence. Based at 12 Wing Shearwater, HOTEF is responsible for all operational testing of new equipment and operating procedures on the Sea King helicopter.
