Getting to 22 Wing
22 Wing North Bay is located at the gateway to Northern Ontario, approximately 400 kms from Ottawa to the east and Toronto to the south. The geographical boundaries of the Wing are defined as west to Sturgeon Falls, east to Mattawa and Temiscaming, north to Marten River and south to Sundridge.

Unique Features of 22 Wing

Underground Complex
The underground complex at 22 Wing, affectionately known as "the Hole" is a three-story building underground. Built during the height of the cold war, construction began in August 1959 and was completed four years later after the removal of 300,000 yards (or 765,000 tons) of rock.

The complex still exists, housing the Canadian Air Defence Sector, 21 Aerospace Control and Warning Squadron and 51 Aerospace Control and Warning Squadron, , Navcan, NASITTUQ and various support sections. Entry to the complex is through two tunnels. There are three entranceways to the office complex, each with a 20-ton blast door.
