Message from the Wing Commander

Welcome to North Bay.

Let me be the first to welcome you to 22 Wing North Bay, home of the NORAD Canadian Air Defence Sector. I know you will cherish the experience and satisfaction of joining a dedicated team of professionals who are committed to accomplishing our mission.

The intent of this information package is to provide you with an overview of the composition and functions of the wing and lodger units and to provide some general information on facilities available for your use. The Public Affairs Officer will be pleased to assist you with any additional questions that you may have for us.

Once again, welcome to the community and my best wishes to you and your family for an enjoyable rewarding tour in North Bay.

To provide surveillance, identification, control and warning for aerospace defence of Canada and North America.

Getting to 22 Wing
22 Wing North Bay is located at the gateway to Northern Ontario, approximately 400 kms from Ottawa to the east and Toronto to the south. The geographical boundaries of the Wing are defined as west to Sturgeon Falls, east to Mattawa and Temiscaming, north to Marten River and south to Sundridge.

Unique Features of 22 Wing

Underground Complex
The underground complex at 22 Wing, affectionately known as "the Hole" is a three-story building underground. Built during the height of the cold war, construction began in August 1959 and was completed four years later after the removal of 300,000 yards (or 765,000 tons) of rock.

Underground complexThe complex still exists, housing the Canadian Air Defence Sector, 21 Aerospace Control and Warning Squadron and 51 Aerospace Control and Warning Squadron, , Navcan, NASITTUQ and various support sections. Entry to the complex is through two tunnels. There are three entranceways to the office complex, each with a 20-ton blast door.
