Underground Complex
The
underground complex at 22 Wing, affectionately known as "the Hole"
is a three-story building underground. Built during the height of the
cold war, construction began in August 1959 and was completed four years
later after the removal of 300,000 yards (or 765,000 tons) of rock.
The complex still exists, housing the Canadian Air Defence Sector, 21 Aerospace Control and Warning Squadron and 51 Aerospace Control and Warning Squadron, , Navcan, NASITTUQ and various support sections. Entry to the complex is through two tunnels. There are three entranceways to the office complex, each with a 20-ton blast door.
