1 Canadian Air Division (1 Cdn Air Div)
Winnipeg is home to the dual Headquarters (HQ) for 1 Canadian Air Division
(1 Cdn Air Div) and the Canadian NORAD Region (CANR). The headquarters
serve as
the central point of command and control for Canada's operational Air
Force and oversees the monitoring of Canada's airspace in support of
our
commitments to the North American Aerospace Defence Command (NORAD).
It also supports the Commander in carrying out regional responsibilities
as Commander Prairie Region Cadets. All 13
Wings report operationally
to 1 Cdn Air Div.
1 Cdn Air Div/CANR HQ was created in 1997 as part of a major re-organization
of Air Command. The strategic planning staff moved to National Defence
Headquarters in Ottawa under the command of the Chief of the Air Staff(CAS).
Operational level activities previously performed by Air Group Headquarters
were consolidated into the new 1 Cdn Air Div/CANR Headquarters.
Located in the Bishop Building at 17 Wing Winnipeg, this busy, modern
HQ has a staff of about 600 regular force and reserve military members
and civilian employees. The HQ oversees the airforce units at 13 operational
air wings across Canada and one unit in Europe, and controls 13 Aircraft
fleets. The Air Operations Centre (AOC) within the HQ directs and monitors
day-to-day air force operations. It contains state-of-the art communications
and data analysis equipment, and is manned 24 hours a day, 365 days a
year.
