Christmas in Ottawa in 1945 comes to vivid life in Angel Square, a staged reading based on the book by Brian Doyle and directed by Janet Irwin
December 18, 2002 -
Ottawa -- The sights and sounds of a bygone era ring in the spirit
of Christmas in Angel Square, a staged reading of the beloved
Ottawa-Valley classic children's book by Brian Doyle, in a new
adaptation directed by Janet Irwin and featuring the talents of
sixteen local performers. Angel Square runs in the NAC Studio
on December 12, 13, 14, 20, 21, 26, 27 and 28 at 19:30, with Saturday
Matinees at 14:00. Tickets are $15 for adults and $11 for children.
(Five student-only matinees are already completely sold-out).
You take your chances crossing Angel Square. If you're
Jewish, you look out for the Irish and the French; if you're
Irish, you look out for the Jews and the French; if you're
French you look out for the Irish and the Jews; if you're Tommy,
you look out for all of them! It's always been that way, but
this year feels different. Sammy Rosenberg's dad has been
brutally beaten and Tommy, inspired by his hero, The Shadow, wants to
find out who did it. Set in Ottawa's Lowertown in December 1945,
this wonderfully evocative story traces Tommy's search for the
vicious attacker and for the spirit of Christmas. Staged in the
intimate Studio space, this production is heartwarming, entertaining
storytelling for the holiday season.
Recommended for ages 10 and up
A wonderfully talented cast brings the colourful characters of
Angel Square to life onstage. Adult cast members are: Barry
Blake, Pierre Brault, Mary Ellis, David L. McCallum, Sarah McVie and
Doug Miller. The young protagonists are played by local Ottawa
student actors, David Coomber, Jordana Cox, Steffi Di Domenicantonio,
Mitchell Doucet, Laine Elizabeth Johnson, Jonathan Koensgen, David
Perry, Simon Rainville, Cameron Rufelds, and Matthew Xhignesse.
Set Design for this Staged Reading is by Victor Elliott, Costume
Coordination by Normand Thériault, Lighting Design by Rebecca
Miller, and Yves Laroche is the Music Director and keyboard
player.
What is a Staged Reading?
It is a presentation of a play in which, though the actors
haven't learned the lines and there isn't a complete set or
costume design, the director and acting company have worked hard to
interpret the characters and to tell a story with some stage
movement. It is, in fact, rather like a radio play.
