The National Arts Centre presents an NAC English Theatre/Necessary Angel Theatre Company coproduction -- A World Premiere! -- Last Romantics by Michael Lewis MacLennan
April 01, 2003 -
"intelligent...ambitious...full of fascinating characters and
clever dialogue" now Magazine
Ottawa -- immediately on the heels of its Toronto run,
Michael Lewis MacLennan's poignant and intriguing new play,
Last Romantics opens at the NAC Studio on April 1, with a
preview on Monday, March 31. The production runs until Saturday,
April 12, with performances at 20:00 and Saturday matinees at
14:00.
Ranging from the drawing rooms of fin-de-siècle London to
dinner in Canada with Prime Minister Mackenzie King, Last
Romantics looks at the remarkable fifty-year relationship between
Charles Ricketts, the influence behind much of the early collection
of the National Gallery of Canada, and Charles Shannon, a gifted
painter. Based in fact, this fictionalized portrayal invokes some of
the most prominent personalities of the early part of the twentieth
century, including Oscar Wilde, and elides time and place to tell a
poignant love story and to create a thrilling portrait of an artistic
community poised on the cusp of the modern age.
