Walt's Back! -- The NAC English Theatre presents Rod Beattie in Wingfield on Ice by Dan Needles Directed by Doug Beattie

April 16, 2003 -

"Wingfield on Ice is theatrical magic that needs no introduction." Weekend Edition

"...a highly entertaining property...audiences are giving standing ovations to Beattie's tour de force" Variety

Ottawa -- Back in Ottawa just in time to bring a thaw into our lives, Rod Beattie brings his hilarious award-winning alter-ego Walt Wingfield to the NAC Theatre in this fifth in the smash-hit series of Wingfield plays, Wingfield on Ice. Hugely successful with audiences and critics, this heart-warming peek into the lives of the folks in Persephone Township marks a significant anniversary for creators Dan Needles, and Rod and Doug Beattie: "Walt's 3000th Performance took place at the Winter Garden in Toronto, Thursday Feb 13 at 8.30 pm before an audience of 751. The play was Wingfield On Ice" (From the Walt Wingfield official home page). Performances are at 19:30, April 16 to 26, with no performances on Sunday or Monday.

As the first frosts come to Persephone Township, Walt and Maggie Wingfield are all set to welcome new life to the farm. She's expecting and he's nesting. But Walt is alarmed by the old feuds that divide the neighbours and disturb the tranquility of the community. His attempts to mend other people's fences meet with a resistance as stiff and cold as the weather itself. And the biggest challenge to all of them is looming on the horizon...

Wingfield on Ice stars Rod Beattie as the stockbroker turned gentleman farmer, Walt Wingfield. Indeed, Beattie plays an entire village of brilliantly conceived characters, including Walt's wife, Maggie. The Wingfield plays are the creation of playwright Dan Needles and Doug Beattie is the director.

The original set design is adapted by John Thompson.

Rebecca Miller is the Stage Manager for this production, and Stéfanie Séguin is the Apprentice Stage Manager.
