The National Arts Centre Theatre Celebrates A Grand Re-Opening After A 3-Month, Million-Dollar Renovation

September 05, 2003 -

OTTAWA -- On Wednesday September 10, 2003, at 17:00, the National Arts Centre proudly unveils the newly renovated Theatre, which plays host to English Theatre, French Theatre, and Dance Series B performances. No longer will a joyful experience of the work on stage be marred by ageing, uncomfortable seating or partially obstructed views. Renovations have been taking place since June, and the million-dollar capital improvements encompass:

• All-new roomier ergonomic theatre seats which offer more cushioning and better back support
• New carpeting
• A new stage floor
• A reconfigured floor plan which offers 8cm more legroom between each row of seats
• Two new vomitories allowing improved access to the stage for the actors, and improved views of the performers on the thrust stage from all areas of the auditorium
• A new access route connecting the auditorium with the backstage area
• Improved technical capabilities, more control locations for the crew, and greater flexibility in those locations

In short, being in the Theatre is now a far more comfortable experience for every member of the audience, as well as for the performers and the technical crew.

On September 10, Peter Herrndorff, President and CEO of the National Arts Centre, will join Marti Maraden, Artistic Director of English Theatre, Denis Marleau, Artistic Director of French Theatre, and Cathy Levy, Producer of Dance Programming, to welcome NAC subscribers for a ribbon-cutting ceremony and light refreshments. This is also a golden opportunity for performing arts lovers to enjoy a "sneak peek" at the Theatre renovations, and to locate and try out their new seats before coming to the NAC for their first performance of the 2003-2004 season.

Media are cordially invited to attend the celebration. The event begins at 17:00 and the ribbon cutting will take place at approximately 17:20.
