Masterclass by NAC Orchestra principal oboe Charles Hamann on Oct. 31 kicks off masterclass series featuring principal winds of the Orchestra at the Conservatoire de musique de Gatineau

October 19, 2005 -

Ottawa, Canada -- The National Arts Centre Orchestra’s 2005-06 masterclass series continues on Monday, October 31 at 19:30 when principal oboe Charles “Chip” Hamann presents the first of four masterclasses by the principal winds of the Orchestra. This series takes place at the Conservatoire de musique de Gatineau in Fernand-Graton Hall at 430 blvd. Alexandre-Taché.

Admission is free and everyone is welcome.

A masterclass is a one-on-one lesson in which a master musician teaches a selected student or ensemble under the watchful eyes of fellow students and members of the public. Thus the audience can learn from the master along with the talented student in the spotlight. This oboe masterclass will be with students from the Conservatoire de musique followed by question-and-answer.

Charles Hamann is recognized as one of Canada’s foremost oboists. In 1993 he was chosen to be Acting Principal Oboe of the NAC Orchestra at the age of 22, and was named Principal Oboe in 1995. In addition to his regular duties with NACO, Mr. Hamann's career has expanded to encompass the roles of teacher, adjudicator, and chamber musician, both in Ottawa and across North America. He is a member of the Faculty of Music of the University of Ottawa, and has adjudicated for the NACO Bursary competition as well as the Conservatoire de Québec. In recent seasons he has presented master classes at the Royal Conservatory in Toronto, the University of Toronto, the University of Nebraska, and across Mexico and the eastern United States with the NAC Orchestra on tour.

The NAC is presenting three categories of masterclasses this season: the “International Series” in collaboration with the University of Ottawa, consisting mainly of major guest soloists with the NAC Orchestra; “Manhattan on the Rideau”, featuring jazz musicians from the Manhattan School of Music linked to the NAC by broadband videoconference, and the “NAC Orchestra Series”, in collaboration with the Conservatoire de musique de Gatineau, of which the Charles Hamann session is a part.
