NAC-CBC Debut Series features soprano Martha Guth in recital on May 16

May 13, 2002 -

Ottawa, Canada -- The Debut Series, co-presented by the National Arts Centre and CBC Radio Two, will feature soprano Martha Guth, winner of the 2001 Jeunesse Musicales Competition, in recital with pianist Martin Dubé. The hour-long concert will take place on Thursday, May 16 in the NAC Studio at 12:00 noon. These recitals give young Canadian musicians the opportunity to perform at the National Arts Centre and to have their recitals recorded and broadcast nationally on CBC Radio Two. Admission is $2.00 with all proceeds going to the NAC Orchestra Bursary Trust Fund. Additional donations to the Fund are greatly appreciated.

The programme to be performed by Martha Guth and Martin Dubé consists of three songs by Fauré, seven songs by Ned Rorem, seven Quatrains by J. Papineau-Couture to poetry by Francis Jammes, and Haugtussa by Grieg to poetry by Arne Garborg. (Complete programme listing follows.)

In her career, Canadian soprano Martha Guth has sung under the batons of Maestros Seiji Ozawa, Richard Bradshaw, Robert Spano and Timothy Vernon. Equally comfortable with opera, oratorio and artsong, Guth has a busy performance schedule. She will be recording her first CD as the winner of the Jeunesse Musicales Competition. Recitals this season have included Toledo, Cincinnati, Toronto, and Montreal, including recorded concerts for the CBC and Radio Canada. Currently she is under contract with the prestigious ensemble for young artists at the Canadian Opera Company, and with which she will be singing Cornelia in Sartorio's Giulio Cesare in Egitto, and understudying lead roles in Rossini's Il Viaggio a Rheims, and Handel's Julius Caesar. Other opera credits include Alcina in Handel's Alcina, Micaela in Bizet's Carmen, and Poulenc's La voix Humaine for solo voice.
