NAC Orchestra presents A Celtic Celebration, a musical journey through the history and culture of the Emerald Isle, as the final CJOH Pops concerts of the season, June 20-22

June 14, 2002 -

Ottawa, Canada -- CJOH Pops audiences will enjoy a musical journey through the history and culture of the Emerald Isle when the National Arts Centre Orchestra led by Jack Everly presents A Celtic Celebration narrated and acted (in English) from Thursday, June 20 to Saturday, June 22 at 20:00 in Southam Hall. Music includes traditional Irish folk songs and dance tunes featuring singers, step dancers and pipers, concluding with a grand Lord of the Dance finale and audience sing-along to numbers like "Sweet Rosie O'Grady" and "When Irish Eyes are Smiling". There are also Celtic-themed orchestral works such as Sir Hamilton Harty's An Irish Symphony, Malcolm Arnold's Four Scottish Dances and Leroy Anderson's Irish Suite, as well as selections from movie scores like Titanic, Braveheart and Far and Away.

A Celtic Celebration is the story of a young Irishman who comes to North America to establish a new life during the Irish Potato Famine of the 1840s, portrayed in letters home to his mother and his young love. The story is told by actor Joey Collins with the voice of actor Helen Gallagher as his mother.

The O'Hare Irish Dancers will perform to such numbers as "The Galway Piper" and "The Girl I Left Behind"; tenor Benjamin Brecher will sing songs including "Molly Malone", "Too-Ra-Loo-Ra-Loo-Ra", "When Irish Eyes are Smiling" and "Danny Boy", and soprano Marta Burton will sing "She Moved Through the Fair". Christopher Layer, an Irish music specialist, is featured in "A Piper Celebration".

A Celtic Celebration is produced by the Symphonic Pops Consortium, a group of symphony orchestras who combine their resources to conceive, create and produce innovative symphonic pops concerts. Conductor Jack Everly will return next season with another SPC programme "Those Glorious Hollywood Musicals".

The National Arts Centre Orchestra will perform A Celtic Celebration from June 20 to 22. Tickets for these CJOH Pops Series concerts are on sale now at $32.50, $45.50 and $56.00, with box seats at $75.00 (GST and Facility Fee included) at the NAC Box Office (Monday to Saturday from 10:00 to 21:00), and through Ticketmaster (with surcharges) at 613-755-1111.
