The NAC-CBC Debut Series continues on January 20 with the Borealis String Quartet

January 07, 2003 -

Ottawa, Canada -- The Debut Series, co-presented by the National Arts Centre and CBC Radio Two, continues on Monday, January 20 with a chamber music concert by the Borealis String Quartet in the NAC Studio at 12:00 noon. These hour-long concerts give young Canadian musicians the opportunity to perform at the National Arts Centre and to have their recitals recorded and broadcast nationally on CBC Radio Two. Admission is $2.00 with all proceeds going to the NAC Orchestra Bursary Trust Fund. Additional donations to the Fund are greatly appreciated.

The Borealis Quartet will perform Haydn's Quartet in B-flat major, "Sunrise", Canadian composer Kelly-Marie Murphy's Quartet No. 4 "Another Little Piece of My Heart" and Schubert's unfinished String Quartet No. 12 in C minor "Quartettsatz".

As electrifying as their name, the Borealis String Quartet is lighting up the skies of the Canadian chamber music scene. The first resident professional string quartet on the University of British Columbia campus, the Borealis has already established itself as a leading-edge Canadian ensemble.

The Borealis String Quartet consists of four young Canadian professionals, Patricia Shih and Yuel Yawney, violins, Nikita Pogrebnoy, viola and Joel Stobbe, cello. In less than two years they have been engaged by the prestigious Vancouver Chamber Music Festival as one of three resident string quartets, qualified for the BC-Yukon finals of the Great Canadian Music Dream competition on CBC TV, been featured in numerous important broadcasts for the CBC and Radio-Canada and are in the middle of a 32-concert tour of BC, Alberta and Ontario this season. In the 2003-2004 season the Borealis will tour for Debut Atlantic, and undertake engagements for major chamber music presenters from coast-to-coast.

After the Borealis String Quartet on January 20, the 2003 NAC-CBC Debut Series continues with the following recitals:

Friday, March 14
Thomas Yu, piano (SK)

Thursday, April 17
Karen Gomyo, violin (QC)
Jean Desmarais, piano

Friday, April 25
Julien Le Blanc, piano (NB)

Tuesday, June 24
Shannon Mercer, soprano (ON)
Stephen Philcox, piano

All recitals take place in the NAC Studio at 12:00 noon. Admission is $2.00 with all proceeds going to the NAC Orchestra Bursary Trust Fund. Additional donations to the Fund are greatly appreciated.
