The NAC-CBC Debut Series features Saskatoon pianist Thomas Yu on March 14
March 12, 2003 -
Ottawa, Canada -- The Debut Series, co-presented by the National
Arts Centre and CBC Radio Two, continues on Friday, March 14 with
Saskatoon pianist Thomas Yu in the NAC Studio at 12:00 noon. This
grand winner of the 2001 Canadian Music Competition (23 years and
under) will perform a recital of music by Chopin, Coulthard,
Dutilleux and Liszt.
These hour-long recitals give young Canadian musicians the
opportunity to perform at the National Arts Centre and to have their
recitals recorded and broadcast nationally on CBC Radio Two.
Admission is $2.00 with all proceeds going to the NAC Orchestra
Bursary Trust Fund. Additional donations to the Fund are greatly
appreciated.
Thomas Yu will perform Three Preludes by Canadian composer
Jean Coulthard, Ballade no. 1 in G minor by Chopin,
Sonate by Henri Dutilleux, and Rigoletto paraphrase by
Liszt.
Thomas Yu, winner of every major provincial competition in
Saskatchewan and a total of eight national prizes in the past five
years, is developing into one of Canada's most versatile
artists. In 1999 he swept the Canadian Federation of Music Teachers
Association piano competition, taking first prize as well as both
awards for best interpretation of a Chopin and Canadian work, both of
which will be performed in this recital. He has performed across
Canada, appearing regularly at the Banff Centre for the Arts and the
Centre d'Arts Orford festivals, and been a soloist with the
Saskatoon and Regina Symphonies.
In addition to his musical studies, Thomas will receive his dental
degree this May, after his fifth and final year of dentistry at the
University of Saskatchewan. This fall, in addition to beginning
studies with Marc Durand at the Glenn Gould Professional School of
Music in Toronto, he will begin his post-graduate studies at the
University of Toronto Hospital Dentistry Program at Mount Sinai
Hospital. In his spare time he is also a hair model for
Haarley's Salon in Saskatoon.
Debut Series recitals take place in the NAC Studio at 12:00 noon.
Admission is $2.00 with all proceeds going to the NAC Orchestra
Bursary Trust Fund. Additional donations to the Fund are greatly
appreciated.
