NAC Orchestra Music Director Pinchas Zukerman and principal cellist Amanda Forsyth donate their services for a benefit concert for the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Friday, June 6 at the Orpheum Theatre

April 16, 2003 -

Ottawa, Ontario -- World-renowned violinist Pinchas Zukerman, Music Director of the National Arts Centre Orchestra, and Amanda Forsyth, principal cello of the NAC Orchestra, will perform a special Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (VSO) benefit concert under the baton of Maestro Bramwell Tovey, VSO Music Director, on Friday, June 6 at 20:00 in Vancouver's Orpheum.

Pinchas Zukerman, Amanda Forsyth, Bramwell Tovey, and all of the members of the VSO are donating their services for this special fundraising benefit concert, which is presented in collaboration with the National Arts Centre Orchestra.

Pinchas Zukerman will perform Beethoven's timeless and beautiful Violin Concerto. In addition, cellist Amanda Forsyth and Zukerman will perform Brahms' Double Concerto for Violin and Cello, each under the baton of recent JUNO Award winner, VSO Music Director Bramwell Tovey. This special VSO performance begins with Berlioz' Roman Carnival, performed by the Orchestra.

"I'm delighted to have the opportunity to join in this special collaboration with Bramwell Tovey and the musicians of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra in support of one of our fellow Canadian orchestras. I'm very much looking forward to this visit," said Pinchas Zukerman. Added Amanda Forsyth: "I'm thrilled to return to Vancouver to participate in this benefit. It is also especially significant for me to interact with young cellists by presenting a master class at UBC where I studied with Eric Wilson during my final years at high school."

VSO Music Director Bramwell Tovey said: "I am thrilled and delighted that the legendary Pinchas Zukerman will join the VSO for a special gala concert performance of Beethoven's Violin Concerto. In the second half, he will perform Brahms' Concerto for Violin and Cello with the brilliant young Canadian cellist, Amanda Forsyth. Maestro Zukerman's music directorship of the National Arts Centre Orchestra and his commitment to music making in Canada, especially his passionate advocacy of music education, brings international prestige to Canadian Orchestras at the highest level. On behalf of myself and the rest of the VSO, we welcome Mr. Zukerman and Ms. Forsyth and look forward to a wonderful celebration of great music."

Ticket prices are: $100.00 (includes post-concert reception), $85.00, $70.00, $50.00, $40.00, and $30.00. All prices are total prices, including GST. Call VSO Customer Service: (604) 876-3434.

While in Vancouver, Pinchas Zukerman and Amanda Forsyth are leading string master classes at the University of British Columbia (UBC) on Thursday, June 5 from 14:00 to 16:30. In addition, on Wednesday, June 4 from 10:00 to 12:00 in Vancouver (13:00 to 15:00 in Ottawa) there will be a broadband video conference session between UBC and the National Arts Centre that will allow NAC Awards Composer Alexina Louie, who will be in Ottawa, to lead young Vancouver piano students in a master class of her compositions. This is the beginning of a three-year commitment as part of the NAC New Music Programme and the NAC's Hexagon project.
