Harpsichordist Trevor Pinnock joins musicians of the NAC Orchestra to perform an all-Baroque chamber music concert for Music for a Sunday Afternoon on May 18

May 05, 2003 -

Ottawa, Canada -- Trevor Pinnock, a harpsichordist of world renown, and the former Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the National Arts Centre Orchestra, will join ensembles of the NAC Orchestra for an all-Baroque chamber music concert as part of the Music for a Sunday Afternoon series on Sunday, May 18 at 14:00 in the Auditorium of the National Gallery of Canada. The concert will include two solo harpsichord works by Handel and Croft, two duets by J.S. Bach and Jacob, and two quintets by J.C. Bach and Telemann.

J.C. Bach's Quintet No. 1 in D major, and Telemann's Quintet in G major from Tafelmusik will both be performed by NACO principal flute Joanna G'froerer, principal oboe Charles Hamann, violinist Leah Roseman, and cellist Margaret Munro Tobolowska, with Pinnock on harpsichord.

Joanna G'froerer will also join Pinnock for J.S. Bach's Sonata in B minor for Flute and Harpsichord, and Charles Hamann will join the harpsichordist for G. Jacob's Sonatina for Oboe and Harpsichord.

Pinnock's two solo works are Handel's Chaconne in G major, and Croft's Ground in C minor.

Trevor Pinnock, who was Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the National Arts Centre Orchestra from 1991 to 1996, and Artistic Advisor from 1996-1998, is also renowned as the Musical Director of the early music ensemble The English Concert which he founded in 1973. He is leaving The English Concert at the end of this season to pursue full time his solo career as harpsichordist.

As a harpsichord soloist, Pinnock's recent recording of J.S. Bach's 6 Partitas for harpsichord (Hänssler Classics 115) won the 2001 Gramophone Award for 'Best Baroque Instrumental' record of the year. The runner-up in this category was his recording with Rachel Podger of J.S. Bach's Sonatas for Violin and Harpsichord (Channel Classics CCS 14798). A new recording for Channel Classics of Rameau's Pièces de clavecin en concert with Rachel Podger and Jonathan Manson has just been released.

Other solo recordings include Scarlatti Sonatas, Handel harpsichord Suites and Bach Goldberg Variations. This year Trevor Pinnock embarks on a new recording of a series of solo works on historical harpsichords. As a soloist he has recorded the Bach Harpsichord Concerti and Haydn's Piano Concerto playing/directing The English Concert, and the Poulenc Harpsichord Concerto with Seiji Ozawa and the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
