Harpsichordist Trevor Pinnock joins musicians of the NAC Orchestra to perform an all-Baroque chamber music concert for Music for a Sunday Afternoon on May 18

Ottawa, Canada -- Trevor Pinnock, a harpsichordist of world
renown, and the former Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of
the National Arts Centre Orchestra, will join ensembles of the NAC
Orchestra for an all-Baroque chamber music concert as part of the
Music for a Sunday Afternoon series on Sunday, May 18 at 14:00 in the
Auditorium of the National Gallery of Canada. The concert will
include two solo harpsichord works by Handel and Croft, two duets by
J.S. Bach and Jacob, and two quintets by J.C. Bach and Telemann.
J.C. Bach's Quintet No. 1 in D major, and
Telemann's Quintet in G major from Tafelmusik will both
be performed by NACO principal flute Joanna G'froerer, principal
oboe Charles Hamann, violinist Leah Roseman, and cellist Margaret
Munro Tobolowska, with Pinnock on harpsichord.
Joanna G'froerer will also join Pinnock for J.S. Bach's
Sonata in B minor for Flute and Harpsichord, and Charles
Hamann will join the harpsichordist for G. Jacob's Sonatina
for Oboe and Harpsichord.
Pinnock's two solo works are Handel's Chaconne in G
major, and Croft's Ground in C minor.
Trevor Pinnock, who was Artistic Director and Principal Conductor
of the National Arts Centre Orchestra from 1991 to 1996, and Artistic
Advisor from 1996-1998, is also renowned as the Musical Director of
the early music ensemble The English Concert which he founded in
1973. He is leaving The English Concert at the end of this season to
pursue full time his solo career as harpsichordist.
As a harpsichord soloist, Pinnock's recent recording of J.S.
Bach's 6 Partitas for harpsichord (Hänssler Classics
115) won the 2001 Gramophone Award for 'Best Baroque
Instrumental' record of the year. The runner-up in this category
was his recording with Rachel Podger of J.S. Bach's Sonatas
for Violin and Harpsichord (Channel Classics CCS 14798).
A new recording for Channel Classics of Rameau's
Pièces de clavecin en concert with Rachel Podger and
Jonathan Manson has just been released.
Other solo recordings include Scarlatti Sonatas, Handel
harpsichord Suites and Bach Goldberg Variations. This year
Trevor Pinnock embarks on a new recording of a series of solo works
on historical harpsichords. As a soloist he has recorded the Bach
Harpsichord Concerti and Haydn's Piano Concerto playing/directing The
English Concert, and the Poulenc Harpsichord Concerto with Seiji
Ozawa and the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
This Music for a Sunday Afternoon series concert, presented in
collaboration with the National Gallery of Canada, takes place on
Sunday, May 18 at 14:00. Tickets at $26.00 (GST and facility fee
included) are on sale now at the NAC Box Office (Monday to Saturday
from 10:00 to 21:00), and through Ticketmaster
(with surcharges) at 613-755-1111. Ticketmaster may also be accessed

Student tickets at $13.50 are on sale in person at the NAC Box Office
upon presentation of a valid student ID card. Music for a Sunday
Afternoon tickets may also be purchased one hour before the concert
outside the Auditorium of the National Gallery.
