The hilarious juggling Flying Karamazov Brothers make a special appearance with the NAC Orchestra to conclude the 2002-03 CJOH Pops Series, June 5-7

May 22, 2003 -

OTTAWA (Ontario) -- The hilarious juggling Flying Karamazov Brothers, who have been thrilling and delighting audiences from Broadway to television to prestigious theatre and concert stages around the world for 30 years, make their debut with the National Arts Centre Orchestra in the final concerts of the 2002-03 CJOH Pops Series from Thursday, June 5 to Saturday, June 7 at 20:00 in Southam Hall.

They aren't brothers, they're not Russian (in fact one of them is from Canada) and they don't really fly. What they do is juggle in a variety of fantastic, mesmerizing and breathtaking styles, and when they have a full orchestra to play with, their originality knows no bounds. Bach's Two Part Invention No. 4 is performed by juggling mallets over a marimba; the Pas de six from Rossini's William Tell becomes a hip-hop comic ballet; the familiar themes of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 are transmitted through their own microphoned hockey-helmeted heads; freeform improvisational club passing becomes a visual equivalent of musical jazz. This and much more make up the hilarious second half of the programme ("Never have I seen musicians laugh so hard!" Grand Rapids Press). The first half has the NAC Orchestra performing a selection of light classics including Dvorák's Slavonic Dance No. 1, J. Strauss's Pizzicatto Polka and Victor Davies' Suite from The Big Top.

The Flying Karamazov Brothers have enjoyed six successful and critically acclaimed runs on Broadway. They have also created and performed their own adaptations of Dumas' The Three Muskateers, Stravinsky's L'Histoire du Soldat, Shakespeare's Comedy of Errors, and Dostoyevsky's The Brothers Karamazov. They have shared the stage with Frank Sinatra, The Grateful Dead, Dolly Parton, The Who, Robin Wiliams, the Blues Brothers and Peter Schickele (P.D.Q. Bach). On television, they have appeared on Seinfeld, The Tonight Show, Great Performances Live from Lincoln Center, several Smothers Brothers shows, and much more. They have performed their symphony show with prestigious orchestras all across North America.

"Last night at the Kennedy Center Concert Hall, the Flying Karamazov Brothers charted the intersection of the twin worlds of music and juggling with a blend of artistry that was part genius, part insanity... In a realm where Mozart, Monty Python and jugglers coexist in a state of manic glee, the Flying Karamazov Brothers are peerless." The Washington Post.

The National Arts Centre Orchestra and the Flying Karamazov Brothers will perform from June 5 to 7. Tickets for these CJOH Pops Series concerts are on sale now at $33.50, $47.00 and $57.50, with box seats at $80.00 (GST and Facility Fee included) at the NAC Box Office (Monday to Saturday from 10:00 to 21:00), and through Ticketmaster (with surcharges) at 613-755-1111 or online at www.nac-cna.ca.
