Classical guitarist Daniel Bolshoy joins musicians from the NAC Orchestra in Music for a Sunday Afternoon on May 1

April 22, 2005 -

Ottawa, Canada -- The National Arts Centre Orchestra’s Music for a Sunday Afternoon concert of May 1 at 14:00 features the engaging young classical guitarist Daniel Bolshoy in a series of duets, solos and trios with members of the NAC Orchestra in the Auditorium of the National Gallery of Canada. The Ottawa guitarist – a prize-winner of the Canadian Music Competition, Portland International Guitar Competition, and Ben Steinberg Music Competition – will perform works by Paganini, Coste, Granados, Assad, Takemitsu, Gnattali and Piazzolla.

Praised for his commitment to making the classical guitar accessible to a wider public, Daniel Bolshoy has performed at many prestigious festivals including the Halifax Guitar Festival, the Indian River Music Festival, and the Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival. Born in Moscow, the Ottawa-based guitarist was featured on the NAC/CBC Debut Series in 2002, and has also performed on the Debut Young Artist Concert Series in Montreal and in Vancouver. This season he has performed solo recital tours of central and western Canada, and he has also performed in several Canadian cities with Ottawa mezzo-soprano Julie Nesrallah as the Nesrallah/Bolshoy Duo. Bolshoy now teaches at the world-renowned School of Music at Indiana University.

Bolshoy will pair up with NAC Orchestra principal second violin Donnie Deacon for Paganini’s dazzling Sonata Concertata; with principal oboe Charles (Chip) Hamann for Napoleon Coste’s fresh and pastoral Le Montanard; with principal flute Joanna G’froerer on alto flute for Toru Takemitsu’s Towards the Sea I; and with cellist Leah Wyber for Radames Gnattali’s Sonata for Cello and Guitar.

Bolshoy will also be featured on solo guitar in Enrique Granados’ Valses Poeticos and Sergio Assad’s Valseana and Preludio et Toccatino. The programme ends with Astor Piazzolla’s fiery Histoire du Tango with Bolshoy together with G’froerer on flute and Deacon on violin.

This Music for a Sunday Afternoon chamber concert takes place on Sunday, May 1 at 14:00 and is presented in collaboration with the National Gallery of Canada.
