The National Tournament of the 29th Annual Canadian Improv Games held at the National Arts Centre April 11-15, 2006. On Tuesday, April 11, in the Theatre at the National Arts Centre, the 29th Annual Improv Games will begin with cheering, laughing and chanting as hundreds of students from across Canada join together for a rousing chorus of the Canadian Improv Games Oath. These students will make the NAC their home as they spend an intense week there in friendly yet furious competition. Students, coaches, parents and volunteers have been working hard since the beginning of the school year to make the improv games possible. The Improv season culminates April 11-15 at the NAC where the 2006 Champion will be named. Catch the excitement of the finals on Saturday, April 15 at 19:30 in the NAC Theatre, where the five top scoring teams from the semi-finals will face off for the Howard Jerome Trophy.

The Improv Festival takes place during the day during the National Tournament. Students are given a chance to hone their Improv skills as they participate in various workshops such as: Theatre Sports, Stories in Games, Singing and Rhyme, Mask, and Clown. Workshops are taught by dedicated Improv coaches. Some of the coaches have a long history of involvement with The Canadian Improv Games, having started as a player many years ago. New this year students taking part in the Improv Festival will connect with students at Holy Heart of Mary Secondary School in St. John’s Newfoundland using Broadband a high speed internet video conferencing technology.

The Canadian Improv Games

This year marks the 29th Season of the Canadian Improv Games (CIG), a spontaneous theatrical “loving competition” played annually by thousands of high school students from Victoria, British Columbia to St. John’s, Newfoundland. For participants, this crazy demanding week is the experience of a life time as they support, cheer and applaud one another while competing against each other. For many students the CIG is an opportunity to make friends across Canada, build self-confidence and hone communication and performance skills. Peter A. Herrndorf, President and Chief Executive Officer of the NAC said: “The Games are an enjoyable way to help these students develop creativity, resourcefulness, problem-solving and communication skills, and ultimately to help them build the confidence to apply these skills in their everyday lives.” The Canadian Improv Games were created by Howard Jerome and Jamie Wyllie based on a concept created by David Shepherd and Howard Jerome.
