NAC's recording of Mozart Flute Quartets wins Opus Award for
April 29, 2002 -
Ottawa (Canada) -- The CBC Records CD of Mozart Flute Quartets
featuring National Arts Centre Orchestra principal flute Joanna
G'froerer, NACO Music Director Pinchas Zukerman on viola, NACO
principal cello Amanda Forsyth, and Canadian violinist Martin Beaver
has been named "Best Chamber Music Recording, Canadian, 2001" by Opus
Magazine.
Opus Magazine says of the Mozart CD: "The National Arts Centre
Orchestra has long been known as a fine Mozart orchestra, and three
of the players on this recording, all associated with the NACO,
continue that tradition. NACO music director Zukerman, for his part,
is a chamber musician of great renown, and principal cellist Amanda
Forsyth offers a firm foundation here. But the orchestra's
principal flute, Joanna G'froerer, is in the spotlight in this
program of Mozart's four flute quartets (the authenticity of at
least part of one of the works is still in doubt.) Her tone is
gorgeous and she blends beautifully with her partners, turning in
readings that are ideally balanced and blessed by an intimate
atmosphere. The pizzicato-accompanied Adagio from the D major quartet
is sheer poetry. "Attractive and stylish" readings, in the words of
Colin Eatock."
In separate but related news, Joanna G'froerer has been
invited to Spain to record Rodrigo's Flute Concerto with Maestro
Maximiano Valdés and the Orquesta Sinfonica del Principado de
Asturias of which he is principal conductor. G'froerer caught
the attention of the conductor with her solo work in Jean
Coulthard's Quiet Song for Flute and Strings which was
included in concerts he led with the National Arts Centre Orchestra
on March 7-8. Valdés has an exclusive agreement with the Naxos
label to record works by Latin American and Spanish composers with
his orchestra in Asturias. The recording will take place in June.
