June 18, 2002 -
Ottawa, Canada -- Music-lovers are invited to observe the gifted
students of the National Arts Centre's Young Artists Programme
in a series of master classes, recitals and chamber music, all but
one of which take place at the University of Ottawa's Freiman
Hall. Thirty-four instrumentalists from Canada and around the world
are participating in this three-week intensive summer training course
with Pinchas Zukerman and an international faculty from June 17 to
July 3.
The Young Artists Programme is now in its fourth year. This
summer's students range in age from 15 to 29, with the majority
coming from across Canada, and the others from Brazil, Britain,
China, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Japan, Korea, Sweden, the United
States and Uzbekistan.
The NAC Young Artists Programme faculty is headed by Pinchas
Zukerman, Music Director of the NAC Orchestra, and Patinka Kopec,
head of the Pinchas Zukerman Performance Program at the Manhattan
School of Music. They are joined in teaching violin and viola by
Grigory Kalinovsky, also from the Manhattan School of Music. Cello
will be taught by Amanda Forsyth, principal cello of the National
Arts Centre Orchestra and Margaret Wong of the NAC Orchestra, with
the Canadian-American cellist Gary Hoffman as special guest artist.
Piano is taught by Tatiana Goncharova of the Manhattan School of
Music with special guest artist Anton Kuerti, the celebrated Canadian
pianist who performs regularly with the NAC Orchestra. Chamber music
is led by violinist Andrew Dawes of the University of British
Columbia. Orchestral repertoire is led by Walter Prystawski,
concertmaster of the NAC Orchestra.
A master class is a one-on-one session between teacher and
student, or teacher and chamber ensemble, observed by an audience.
Other sessions open to the public include a recital by former Young
Artist Programme participant Jessica Linnebach, and a recital by two
faculty members. The programme culminates in a chamber music concert
featuring all the participants.
Freiman Hall (Room 121) is located in the Perez Building (Music
Faculty), 610 Cumberland Street at the
University of Ottawa. Admission is $5.00 at the door for each
session. Seating is limited.
