Noonhour recitals at the Fourth Stage feature stars of the Atlantic Canada's thriving classical music scene from April 28-May 1

OTTAWA (Ontario) -- The second week of the National Arts Centre's Atlantic Scene features a series of five noon-hour recitals by young stars of East Coast classical music. These hour-long concerts take place on the Fourth Stage at 12:00 from April 28 to May 2. Tickets for each of the five concerts are $5.00.

Marc Djokic, violin » Lynn Stodola, piano
Monday, April 28 - 12:00 National Arts Centre, Fourth Stage

Young violinist Marc Djokic shares the stage with his mother, critically acclaimed pianist and CBC recording artist Lynn Stodola. Marc is son of violinist Philippe Djokic - frequently heard with Lynn at the Ottawa Chamber Music Festival, and brother of cellist Denise Djokic - a rising star and the featured soloist in Symphony Nova Scotia's Atlantic Scene concert. Programme: Beethoven's "Kreutzer" Sonata, Ysaye's Sonata for solo violin in E major, Saint-Saens's Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso and Canadian composer Jean Papineau-Couture's Trois Caprices.

Dale Kavanagh, guitar
Tuesday, April 29 - 12:00 National Arts Centre, Fourth Stage

"Spirited," "impressive," "mature," and "impassioned." That's what critics are saying. One of the guitar world's most gifted interpreters, Halifax-born Dale Kavanagh thrills audiences worldwide with her technical precision and mastery of interpretation. Programme: Carlo Domeniconi's Tryptichon, Michael Praetorius's Courante, Ballet and La Volta, Rodrigo's Invocation et Danse, Pipo's Cancio y Danza No. 1, and three of Dale Kavanagh's own compositions: Toronto 98, On the Briny Ocean Toss, and Three Pieces.

Sean Rice, clarinet » Patrick Cashin, piano
Wednesday, April 30 - 12:00 National Arts Centre, Fourth Stage

Young Newfoundland clarinettist Sean Rice performed as soloist with the National Arts Centre Orchestra for its student matinee in St. John's on its Atlantic Tour 2002, and has also been selected to perform in the 2002 CBC 'Up and Coming' radio series and is a recipient of the 2001 Yamaha Rising Star Award from Musicfest Canada. He teams up with fellow Memorial University student Patrick Cashin to present a program of Romantic and twentieth-century works including Carl Maria von Weber's Grand Duo Concertante, Johannes Brahms' Sonata No.1 and Witold Lutoslawski's Dance Preludes.

Michel Cardin, lute
Thursday, May 1- 12:00 National Arts Centre, Fourth Stage

Recognized in the music world as one of today's best lutenists, award-winning Michel Cardin has earned rave reviews for his artistic interpretations. Critics have called his playing "fascinating, full, delicious" (Rhein-Neckar-Zeitung), "vigorous, expressive, clear and nuanced." (Le Joueur de Luth). The programme will include works by Weiss, Bach, Kellner and Dufault, and his own arrangements of Greensleeves, and Pachelbel's Canon.

Duo Concertante
Friday, May 2 - 12:00 National Arts Centre, Fourth Stage

Duo Concertante has gained recognition across Canada for performances marked with brilliance, passion, subtlety and superb musicianship. The teamwork of violinist Nancy Dahn and pianist Timothy Steeves is hailed as "one flawlessly harmonious package." Programme consists of Brahms's Scherzo, Manuel de Falla's Suite populaire, Franz Schubert's Fantasy for Violin and Piano in C major, and Kelly-Marie Murphy's Dance Me to your Beauty with a Burning Violin.

The National Arts Centre's Atlantic Scene is the first in a series of biennial regional festivals to take place in the nation's capital which will showcase the best in Canadian arts and culture from coast to coast. Four hundred established and emerging artists from the East Coast will take part in 85 events ranging from theatre, visual arts, film, comedy and literature, to Celtic, Acadian, pop and classical music - and even culinary arts.
