Ottawa, Canada -- Music-lovers are invited to observe the gifted participants of the National Arts Centre's Young Artists Programme, Conductors Programme and Young Composers Programme in a series of masterclasses, recitals, chamber music and workshops open to the public at the University of Ottawa and National Arts Centre between June 18 and July 5.

The Young Artists Programme is now in its fifth year. Thirty-six instrumentalists are participating in the three-week intensive summer training course with Pinchas Zukerman and an international faculty from June 16 to July 4. The students, ranging in age from 15 to 25, come from St. John's, Newfoundland to Victoria, BC in Canada, as well as from China, Hungary, Israel, Russia, Spain, the USA and Uzbekistan.

The Conductors Programme is in its third year led by Jorma Panula and Pinchas Zukerman. This year there are eight conductors plus auditors participating from June 23 to July 3.

This is the inaugural year of the Young Composers Programme. There are four Canadian composers plus two copyists working under the guidance of Lead Composer Gary Kulesha. From June 25 to July 5 the participants will be workshopping their compositions on an ensemble of musicians.

NAC Young Artists, Conductors and Young Composers open events

A masterclass is a one-on-one session between teacher and student, or teacher and chamber ensemble, observed by an audience. Other Young Artists Programme sessions open to the public include recitals by participants and faculty. The Programme culminates in a chamber music concert featuring all the participants. The Young Composers Programme offers two public workshops to observe the participants' works in progress, as well as lectures by faculty members. The Conductors Programme ends with a concert featuring the National Arts Centre Orchestra led by four of the participants.
