Home of the Griffon helicopter, 1 Wing supports the Canadian Army by airlifting troops and equipment anywhere in the world. Its six tactical helicopter and training squadrons are spread out across the country.
Equipped with a fleet of CH-146 Griffons, 1 Wing provides combat-ready aviation support to the army. 1 Wing consists of a Headquarters, located in Kingston, Ontario, and six squadrons dispersed throughout Canada. Self-contained and field-deployable, the five Tactical Helicopter Squadrons (THS) that make up 1 Wing support specific Army brigades within their geographic regions. The sixth is an operational squadron located in New Brunswick.
The squadrons provide support to peacekeeping operations, land force training as well as support to other government departments including the RCMP. In recent years, 1 Wing squadrons have taken part in many operations such as Op Athena in Afghanistan in 2003-2004 and Op Halo in Haiti in 2004. Currently 1 Wing’s Tactical Uninhabited Aviation Vehicle (TUAV) is deployed to Afghanistan on Op ARCHER. The TUAV Flight is made up of two detachments of 100 members from 408 THS and the 5e Régiment d’artillerie légère du Canada (5 RALC) from CFB Valcartier. 1 Wing is a pioneer in integrating the Reserves with the Regular Force.
