News Releases19 Wing United Way Success Nov. 21, 2006 The 2006 United Way fundraising campaign was touted as an opportunity for members of 19 Wing to contribute to the local community and it was an unequivocal success. 19 Wing's United Way campaign was led this year by Captain Angela Reid who, together with the members of 19 Wing, raised $23,297. This well surpassed the goal of $19,190 and was an increase of more than $1000 over the amount raised in 2005. Even more impressive is the fact that 19 Wing's contribution makes up almost 13% of the United Way's total 2006 goal of $180,000! Military and civilian members on the Wing individually donated a considerable portion of the money raised. As well, numerous organized special events were run such as a Pancake Breakfast, Parachute Simulator rides and Flexible Fridays, during which members are authorized to dress in civilian clothes for a small donation. The importance of the campaign can be clearly identified when one takes into consideration that one in three people in the Comox Valley is touched by at least one of the 25 agencies that are supported by the Comox Valley United Way. Although many of the agencies that receive funds donated through the United Way are geared towards individuals with various health or wellness concerns, there are also agencies that provide more general services to the residents of the Comox Valley such as Comox Valley Links, a non-profit organization that provides free access to community information via their website, http://www.valleylinks.net/. Most people will also be quite familiar with Comox Valley organizations such as the Canadian Red Cross and St. John Ambulance, both of which are supported by the Comox Valley United Way. Overall, Col. Jon Ambler, 19 Wing Commander has expressed his pride in and appreciation for the significant contributions of 19 Wing members to this worthy cause. Although 19 Wing's military members may not stay in the valley long before being posted off on their next duty they aim to make a significant contribution to the community while they are here. |
