Snowbirds Form International Friendship

December 5, 2006

By Lieutenant (Navy) Petra Smith

15 Wing, Moose Jaw – A sunny, snow-laden prairie landscape provided a fitting Canadiana scene to a unique international visit to 15 Wing Moose Jaw, based on a common love of aviation.

The Canadian Forces Snowbirds were delighted to host the Republic of Korea Air Force Black Eagles between November 22 to 24 to share lessons learned and best practices as well as to foster a spirit of international cooperation.

“This visit provided a professional exchange of ideas,” said Major Cory Blakely, Snowbird Three and Executive Officer, Canadian Forces Snowbirds. “It was truly an honour for us to host the Black Eagles, a professional, inspiring and world-renowned jet team.”

During the Republic of Korea Air Force Black Eagles’ visit to 431 (Air Demonstration) Squadron, the team had the opportunity to fly in a four-jet formation with the Snowbirds. The Republic of Korea Air Force Black Eagles were especially impressed with the closeness of the Snowbirds’ formations.“

Flying with the Snowbirds was a highlight of my life,” said Captain Ham-il Lim, Inner Left Wing, Republic of Korea Air Force Black Eagles.

Sharing information on Squadron operations, team manoeuvres and formation flying techniques, the visit provided a unique professional development opportunity.

The two jet teams also participated in cultural tours around the Snowbirds’ home base of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan.
