John Horton’s life-long love affair with the sea and Maritime industries is readily apparent in his paintings and his lifestyle. At an early age he entered the Royal Navy and served in the Pacific, Atlantic, and finally, in the British Fishery Protection Squadron in the Arctic. John immigrated to Canada in 1966 and continues to have a close relationship with the commercial and fishing industry. He has volunteered his boat and himself into the Canadian Lifeboat service on the Fraser River in British Columbia for the past 30 years. Married to a Nova Scotian, he has traveled across the country painting the marine heritage of various areas including Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia waterfronts. John keenly observes and recreates on canvas the life, history and industries which have arisen from the sea. He is a scrupulously realistic painter whose works embody technical mastery, a discerning eye for detail, and for accuracy of representation. John’s natural feeling from the sea is complimented by his profound sense of history and his sensitivity to the many moods and subtleties of maritime life. He was appointed to the Canadian Forces Artists’ Programme in 2002 creating works that illustrated the Navy’s work in the war on terrorism. Mr. Horton’s works hang in many International, Private, Corporate and Public collections. He is a founding member of the Canadian Society of Marine Artists.

2006 $20 Silver Coin-The Ketch
Prepare to be swept away by the most majestic sight at sea - tall ships. This finely crafted coin depicts a Ketch as it rounds the bend off of Cape Diamond in southern Quebec. The sailors that can be seen are in the process of preparing the ship for a storm that is coming in. The rolling storm clouds and lightening flashes of the imminent storm are beautifully represented in the partial hologram. The Ketch is similar to a Yawl but has its mizzen mast in front of the rudder. This magnificent ship was one of the few ketches to travel along the St. Lawrence seaways in the early 19th century. Though the ketch brings back memories of the past this ship is a popular yachting ship of today. This is the second coin in this extraordinary collection of hologram-enhanced 99.99% pure silver coins following the full rigged three-masted ship.
