In 1998, the Royal Canadian Mint refinery first put its hallmark on gold of the highest recognized level of purity, known as "5 nines," or 99999 fine, on a numismatic coin.
While many mints around the world produce bullion coins, the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf - struck in gold that is "four nines fine" - is a global favourite with investors.
Introduced in 1979, Gold Maple Leaf coins fast became the standard by which other bullion coins are measured. These precision-crafted coins were the first ever to reach the heightened level of 9999 purity, an achievement reflected in the "9999" hallmark found on every one of these 24-karat gold coins.
The renown of our Gold Maple Leaf ensured the success of the Silver Maple Leaf bullion coin, which was first produced in 1988. The Platinum Maple Leaf, minted from 1988 to 1999, is no longer in production. However, it is still in great demand in after-market trading.
Coins, bars, wafers Maple Leaf bullion coins struck by the Royal Canadian Mint are valued for their portability, liquidity and purity - guaranteed by the Government of Canada. These coins can be customized to commemorate achievements, anniversaries or special events. Custom coins are struck with privy marks and are further distinguished by a reverse-proof maple leaf. In 1999, we developed and introduced the first hologram Gold Maple Leaf coin sets.
The Mint also refines and produces gold kilo bars, trade bars and one-, five- and ten-ounce gold wafers to the same quality standard. All are struck with their weight, gold purity level and the Royal Canadian Mint hallmark.
