Message of Solidarity to the World March of Women

Today in New York Rights & Democracy sends a special message of congratulations and support to members of the Continental Network of Indigenous Women.

Montr?al, October 17, 2000 ? Today in New York, as women end a March that has united women world wide in their common struggle, Rights & Democracy sends a special message of congratulations and support to members of the Continental Network of Indigenous Women: Sonia Henr?quez of Panama, Nancy Henr?quez of Nicaragua, and Ruth Pe?afiel of Ecuador.

These indigenous leaders were part of the official delegation, which met today with United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan. They presented a list of demands to help put an end to poverty and violence against women.

Rights & Democracy, which has supported the World March of Women since its creation, reaffirms its commitment to the struggle for women's equality, dignity and justice and congratulates all the women who have made this event an unprecedented success.

This March is no one-time event. It is part of women's ongoing efforts to end violence and poverty that continue to afflict their gender in disproportionate measures. Rights & Democracy will continue to work to promote and defend the rights of women in particular, indigenous women and to have women's voices heard in movements for democracy worldwide.

Since its inception, Rights & Democracy has focused on mainstreaming women's rights as human rights and on developing expertise on violence against women, particularly in conflict situations.

Rights & Democracy is a non-partisan, independent Canadian institution created by an Act of Parliament in 1988 to promote, advocate and defend the democratic and human rights set out in the International Bill of Human Rights. In cooperation with civil society and governments in Canada and abroad, Rights & Democracy initiates and supports programmes to strengthen laws and democratic institutions, principally in developing countries.
