What Is the Alberta Veterinary Surveillance Network?
The Alberta Veterinary Surveillance Network (AVSN) is a comprehensive, integrated surveillance system of Alberta livestock for diseases of importance to market access, public health, and food safety. It provides continuous, timely information about the health of Alberta’s livestock and supports appropriate response efforts and communications.
AVSN has 3 components: Veterinary Practice Surveillance (VPS), the Livestock Pathology Consultation Program (LPCP) and the Livestock Disease Investigation Network (LDIN).
Veterinary Practice Surveillance (VPS)
Veterinary Practice Surveillance (VPS) is an innovative approach to surveillance that provides the framework for veterinarians to share information via the Internet. This system was initially designed to collect information about diseases of cattle, but expansion to include poultry is planned. Click here to see some VPS data to date.
Livestock Pathology Consultation Program (LPCP)
The Livestock Pathology Consultation Program (LPCP) consists of a team of pathologists that provides expertise in diagnostic laboratory medicine to investigate significant disease problems or unresolved health issues identified by private practitioners or through VPS and LDIN activities. LPCP also supports activities directed by the Office of the Chief Provincial Veterinarian (OCPV).
Livestock Disease Investigation Network (LDIN)
The Livestock Disease Investigation Network (LDIN) consists of a team of epidemiologists, surveillance veterinarians and pathologists that investigate significant disease problems identified by private veterinary practitioners or through VPS and LPCP activities. LDIN also supports activities directed by the Office of the Chief Provincial Veterinarian (OCPV)
