Budget 2006 provides resources to sustain the land
March 24, 2006

A $5 million budget increase ($15 million over three years) will help better manage Alberta’s land, and will include a consultation with Albertans on the development of a comprehensive Land Use Framework.

The funding will provide for additional land management activity, as well as improve land information systems. The $2 million boost in funding for land management activities will allow the government to:

  • enhance land use planning,
  • enhance partnerships to improve public rangeland, and
  • look for greater efficiencies in stewarding the public land base.

Another $2 million will enhance land information systems, allowing for better management, collection and distribution of information. Updated, accurate information will lead to better land use decisions and more effective environmental management and resource development.

In addition, $1 million will be allocated to consult with Albertans on the development of a comprehensive Land Use Framework to guide future decisions on how Alberta’s land is used.

The consultation will begin in late spring or early summer, and will include regional and provincial forums and public education and awareness projects.
