An additional $303.3 million in funding will build 15 new schools and modernize six existing schools over the next four years. The funding will also be used to purchase 130 new modular classrooms in this fiscal year.
This investment will address health and safety concerns, community growth and enrolment changes. It is the second phase of the provincial government’s ongoing investment in school infrastructure. Capital funding of $207 million was announced in September 2005.
The provincial government’s Schools for Tomorrow capital plan, a guiding document for new school construction, modernization and modular classrooms, will be completed later this fall. Based on the priorities as identified by school boards, the five-year plan will map out future sustainability and investment in schools infrastructure.
The $303.3 million also includes funding for Francophone school projects that will be announced this fall.
Funding for school capital projects in the 2006-07 fiscal year is now $572 million. The Government of Alberta’s support for Kindergarten to Grade 12 now totals about $5.6 billion this year.
