Planning today for Alberta's continued prosperity in the future
March 30, 2004

The Government of Alberta has a plan that will help the province build on the successes of the past decade and serve as a guide for government policy and direction over the next 20 years.

The strategy, entitled Today's Opportunities, Tomorrow's Promise, emphasizes four key areas, or pillars, crucial to the province's future:

  • Unleashing innovation — creating an environment that will bring new technology and ideas into Alberta's traditional natural-resource based economy.
  • Leading in learning — investing in Alberta's learning system to ensure Albertans can accomplish their educational goals.
  • Competing in a global marketplace — ensuring reliable export markets and keeping Alberta competitive.
  • Making Alberta the best place to live, work and visit — improving the quality of life for Albertans and keeping social services responsive, modern and affordable.
  • More information.

These pillars focus on providing Alberta, and Albertans, with new opportunities, not only in traditional areas such as development of natural resources, but also through increased emphasis on value-adding industries such as manufacturing and technology.

The Alberta government has already taken some steps to implement the plan, including the Alberta SuperNet and the provincial water strategy — innovative new directions that will provide Albertans with greater opportunities.

More initiatives under the strategy were announced in the 2004-07 Government of Alberta and ministry business plans on March 24, 2004. Further actions will be outlined in each year's annual business plans.
