Serving and retired members and their families of 16 Wing in Borden have access to a wide range of programs and activities.

For the recreation enthusiast, Borden offers one of the most developed sports facilities in the Canadian Forces. The fitness facility includes a huge pool, two arenas, two gymnasiums, soccer pitches, and ball diamonds. You'll also find two golf courses, a bowling alley and extensive wood-chip running trails around the base.

Borden is also known for having a highly active community recreation department. It runs over 50 clubs, ranging from Boy Scouts and Girl Guides to mixed bridge, amateur radio, ceramics, a rod and gun club and golf.

The official base newspaper, the Borden Citizen, is distributed to all units and outlets on the base. The weekly publication keeps the Borden community informed about what is happening on the base. You will find the Borden Citizen at 1000 Main Street, Borden L0M 1C0 Phone: 705-423-2496

Outside the base gates, is one of the major tourist regions in Ontario, with a range of cultural, recreation and historic sites from which to choose. Simcoe County, or "cottage country" is renowned for its many beaches and lakes. As well, there are no less than 7 golf courses within reach of the base.

While Canada's largest city, Toronto, is only an hour's drive away, the closest major centre is Barrie, a city of 100,000. Since there are so many ex-military personnel live in the area, you'll find a wide range of veterans clubs. Among them are the Royal Canadian Legion, The Army, Navy and Air Force Club, the RCAF Association and the Korean Veterans Club.

The Borden community has always enjoyed a close relationship with the citizens of Barrie. On several occasions, it has been awarded the Freedom of the City, demonstrating the affection and esteem the Barrie community has for its military counterparts. This spring, 16 Wing was given that honour.
