Drivers & Vehicles

In Alberta, the rules of the road are covered in the Traffic Safety Act and regulations under the Act dealing with cargo securement, commercial vehicles, inspections, bus safety rules of the road, driver training and driver examinations, vehicle equipment vehicle seizure, demerit points and log haul regulations.

There are seven different classes of driver licences in Alberta. These licences allow you to do everything from learn to drive, operate a taxi or drive a commercial vehicle. Having a licence is your key to driving in Alberta. It takes study and practice to be a safe driver. With the knowledge and skill that comes from education and training, drivers will become more aware of their responsibilities when behind the wheel and the role they play in improving traffic safety. Driving is a privilege!

Alberta requires vehicle safety inspections to ensure that vehicles are maintained for safe operation. All vehicles last registered in another jurisdiction or declared salvage by an insurance company must undergo an inspection after repairs are completed and before they can be re-registered. Licensed inspection technicians perform the inspections at licensed vehicle inspection stations (usually an automotive repair facility or a service station with a repair shop).

Identifying and removing unsafe vehicles from the road can prevent vehicle failure on Alberta's highways and reduce collisions that may result in injuries or death. Through monitoring and enforcing safety standards, Alberta Infrastructure and Transportation aims to keep the province's highways safe for all road users.
