Consultation Guidelines Update:
Although some First Nations have signed a resolution concerning The Government of Alberta’s First Nations Consultation Guidelines on Land Management and Resource Development, the government is proceeding with implementation and continuous monitoring of these guidelines. This includes dialogue with First Nations and industry, accepting ongoing feedback, and adjusting the guidelines as necessary. read more >>

The Government of Alberta has a long-standing relationship with Aboriginal people in the province. AAND is responsible for developing policies and strategies respecting Aboriginal and northern issues and for implementing specific initiatives in these important areas. The Aboriginal Policy Framework is a guiding policy that sets out the long-term structure for existing and new Government of Alberta policies to address First Nations, Metis, and other Aboriginal issues in the province.
Alberta's Aboriginal population is one of the youngest and fastest growing in the province. Alberta has 47 First Nations and is the only province in Canada to provide a land base for Metis Settlements. Many urban centres also have large Aboriginal populations. In 2001, the census metropolitan area (CMA) of Edmonton had the second highest Aboriginal identity population at 40,930 while the CMA of Calgary had the 4th largest Aboriginal identity population at 21,915 of all CMA's in Canada.
AAND is also responsible for the Northern Alberta Development Council, a regional development organization with a focus on advancing the development of the northern economy. Northern Alberta has over 150 communities and holds 60 per cent of the province's land mass, and is known for its vast resources, ranging from all of Canada's oil sands development, 90 per cent of Alberta's forests, nearly 40 per cent of Alberta's conventional oil and gas activity, and incredible tourism and economic development opportunities.
As Alberta enters its Second Century, Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development will continue to focus on enhancing the well-being and self-reliance of Aboriginal people and to expand social and economic opportunities for Northern Albertans and communities.
