Vehicle Safety Head Graphic Preparing Your Vehicle for Winter

The first snow fall of the year comes and suddenly driving becomes a little more difficult. You haven't forgotten how to drive, you just haven't refreshed yourself on good winter driving skills and practices.

The first thing to do before winter comes is to make sure your vehicle is in shape for the season. While you're facing the challenges of driving under poor road conditions, you don't need the extra hassle of your vehicle letting you down.

Prepare for winter by getting a complete tune-up in the fall. Generally, make sure your battery, belts, hoses, radiator, ignition system, lights, brakes and exhaust systems are checked. Snow tires will give the best traction, and make sure you check and equalize tire pressure as it decreases in colder weather.

Carry an emergency kit in case you find yourself stranded. This should include a blanket, shovel, candle, matches, booster cables, and reflective warning sign or road flares. For a full listing of what you should carry in your emergency kit, click here.

Preparation is the key to safe winter driving. That's why you should take the time to ensure you are fully prepared to handle Alberta's winter road conditions.
