Ambient Air Monitoring

Alberta Environment, air quality management zones, Environment Canada, and industry operate a comprehensive network of nearly 140 air quality monitoring stations across Alberta that measure the ambient air quality.

  • nine stations are operated by Alberta Environment
  • about 30 stations are operated by air quality management zones
  • one station is operated by Environment Canada
  • close to 100 stations are operated by industry as an Approval requirement

Several atmospheric substances are measured using a variety of monitoring methods and analytical techniques.

"Current Air Quality" and the Air Quality Index provide Albertans with a measure of outdoor air quality. A number of air quality reports and special air quality surveys have been provided for your information.

To provide further flexibility in Alberta's monitoring program two mobile monitoring vehicles are currently in operation. The Mobile Air Monitoring Laboratory (MAML) and the Emergency Air Monitoring Vehicle (AMV).

Air quality data collected by Alberta Environment, air quality management zones and Environment Canada are available electronically at the Clean Air Strategic Alliance - CASA Data Warehouse .
