New strategy will reduce skill and labour shortage
July 25, 2006

A new 10-year labour force development strategy will result in more workers, better educated workers and innovative and safe workplaces.

The strategy, Building and Educating Tomorrow’s Workforce, is based on extensive consultations with Albertans and stakeholders held in winter 2006. More than 350 online responses were received, and more than 60 group presentations were held.

The strategy identifies 17 priority actions centred on four themes:

  • Inform Albertans and employers about labour market trends as well as training and education opportunities.
  • Attract people to Alberta.
  • Develop the knowledge and skills of Albertans, as well as innovative workplaces.
  • Retain people in Alberta’s workforce.

This year seven different stakeholder groups will also develop sub-strategies in the following areas:

  • Aboriginal
  • construction
  • energy
  • health care
  • manufacturing
  • retail trade
  • tourism and hospitality

More sub-strategies will be developed next year.

The strategy will help shape future government direction, and will ensure the province remains globally competitive. As a major step in moving the strategy into action, key stakeholders will attend a symposium to share ideas and practices on attracting and retaining workers and discuss innovative approaches to developing existing talent.
